Week Commencing 2nd May 2016

Dear Parents and Carers,

Forest School

We had an enthusiastic and energetic group for the next forest school session starting this week and they all showed off their adventurous personalities. We were a bit afraid about the weather as it was meant to be stormy although we had a lovely sunny morning in the woods.

As we always do, we started the adventure by explaining the rules we must follow when we are having fun in the woods. They all understood the methodology quite quickly, so we headed to St Martha's car park ready for a fun morning. The first thing to do when we arrived was to look at a map and to explain where we were and where we had to go. This seemed to be an energetic group so we risked going to the top of the hill and we did it! Through the path, we saw different trees and we experienced with different textures. We also found a hatched egg which fell out from a nest so we talked about Spring and new lives.

Once we reached the top we washed our hands and we enjoyed a lovely snack with amazing views of Guildford 's Cathedral. Once finished we headed back to the van where we found a den made out of sticks and branches. Lee hid from us and started to make sounds as if a Gruffalo was close, so we hid from him till he found us. It was a really cool first experience for this group of scouts.

Living Eggs

The eggs have started to hatch and move over to their new home! All the children are really excited and are building their understanding of growth and development.

Over the next few weeks we will continue to care for them and watch them grow. Please feel free to pop into Sunflowers to see them as much as you like!

New Menu

The new menus are ready, please have a look through them and give us any feedback (all attached).

Procedure for control of hazardous substances (COSHH)

Aim of policy

To give guidance on handling and storing hazardous substances.

See the current risk assessments and the risk assessment policy.

Points to consider

  1. All staff will receive information on COSHH regulations and be expected to adhere to the regulations.

  2. The number of hazardous substances will be kept to an absolute minimum and be provided with relevant COSHH sheets.

  3. Spillages must be swept up and disposed of in plastic bags or mopped up using plenty of cold water and diluted to a safe level before disposal.  Brushes, mops and disposable cloths should be well rinsed after use and contaminated paper products disposed of in closed plastic bags.  The Manager must be informed of any significant spillage.

  4. After handling a hazardous substance, staff must remove protective clothing and wash hands before resuming work, touching food or leaving the premises.

  5. Emergencies resulting from swallowing, inhaling, skin or eye contact must be dealt with in accordance with first aid provision and with instructions issued by the manufacturers of the substance.

  6. Medication for personal use must be treated as a hazardous substance whether or not excessive dosage is to be harmful. All medication brought onto the premises must be surrendered to the manager and stored in the kitchen medication cupboard or kitchen fridge

  7. It should be assumed that all forms of bodily discharge are potentially infectious and the appropriate precautions observed in disposing of contaminated materials and subsequent cleaning.

  8. Hazardous substances are to be kept in the containers in which they were supplied and are not to be transferred to and stored in other containers which are unidentified or which have incorrect markings.

  9. It is unlikely that radioactive substances or known carcinogens will be deliberately brought onto the premises.  However, if there are grounds to suspect that any such material is present, the nursery Health and Safety Co-ordinator must be notified immediately.

There are special regulations covering the control of substances, which are hazardous to health.

The regulations lay down what an Employer must do to protect people in the work place against health risks arising from swallowing, inhaling or having contact with toxic, irritant, carcinogenic, infectious or radio-active substances.

    An employer must:

  • Identify those substances that are covered by COSHH.
  • Assess the risk of someone being harmed by them.
  • Try to reduce the risk by substituting another, less hazardous substance, or reducing the quantities used.
  • Monitor the procedures in the Nursery for controlling hazardous substances to ensure they are still appropriate and are being observed by all members of staff and contractors.

Kind regards,

Week Commencing 25th April 2016

Dear Parents and Careers,

Forest School

Today was our last session of forest school for the current group, we were all very excited to get started as we knew we would be cooking on the fire today. We headed to the shed to get our supplies and then found an area for our fire. We found some hazel sticks and peeled them to make our own skewers to cook the marshmallows. We cooked marshmallows on the fire and ate them with biscuits, they were really yummy! After this we made sure we put out the fire and split into groups to play hide and seek before heading back to nursery.

Parents Forest Taster Session

A reminder that Lee the Forest School leader will be holding the parents Forest School taster session this Sunday 24th April at 10.00am, so please come along and see for yourself why your children love the Forest School sessions!

Living Eggs

Exciting news that the chicks will be back with us from Monday (25th)!

Over the next few weeks we will watch them hatch and grow. Please feel free to pop into Sunflowers to see them as much as you like!

Sun cream and sun hats

As summer is quickly approaching and hopefully the lovely weather will continue can we please ask you to make sure your child has labelled sun cream at nursery and a labelled hat when appropriate.

Annual Survey

Survey results

Thank you to everyone who completed the survey this year. The results have been invaluable and the results will go into our new focused improvement plans.

Here are the highlights of the feedback given:

Nursery strengths:

Communication within the nursery.

The staff are committed and approachable.

Stimulating garden areas.

The nursery atmosphere.

Nursery areas to improve:

The variety of the food within the tea menu.

Continue to improve and discuss with parents our daily planned and spontaneous activities both inside and outside.

Develop our parent notice boards within the rooms by having a main parent display board in the hallway.

The nursery buggy shed is small and it can be hard to fit buggies in at times.

Key things we have taken from the feedback and are in the process of developing:

Parent Notice board

We currently have communication notice boards in all the rooms for parents to refer to regarding menus, routines etc, but we are now going to be introducing a main parent notice board which will be located in the hallway for you all to refer to. If there is any particular information you would like to view on a parent noticeboard please let me know your thoughts!

Buggy Sheds

Our maintenance team are going to look into this, but obviously with space and our location we are limited. In the meantime please can you make sure your buggies are folded up when put in the buggy shed and please can you make sure that other people who may be collecting know to do this as well. I will keep you updated.

Tea menu

The new Summer menus are starting the week of 2nd May, therefore this is the perfect chance to introduce a more varied tea menu.

After viewing Markenfield and Shamley Green’s tea menu our aim is to continue to offer a mixture of cooked and dried teas each week but develop a more varied menu for all ages. As this was mentioned in our parent survey we would love your suggestions of teas you would like to see on the new menu.

Please bear in mind it’s the management team here that organise and prepare the teas and our real issue is time and kitchen space, but we would love your help and suggestions of any ideas you have. Additionally, if there are certain fillings you would rather your child not have here at nursery then please let us know as we can offer alternate fillings.

For our previous autumn/winter menu we introduced soup, baked beans, spaghetti hoops, cheesy pasta along with our ongoing favourites of warm baguettes, crumpets and pizza and salad. For our summer menu due out we have already added homemade cheese and marmite twists, cous cous with peppers, filled wraps, cheese and tomato crackers. Please let me know your thoughts so we can introduce an exciting, varied tea menu.

Carbon monoxide evacuation procedure

Aim of policy

To give guidance to staff on what to do if the carbon monoxide alarms indicate a leak.

Points to consider

It is important that all staff familiarise themselves with the Carbon Monoxide detector in their setting as there are a wide range of detectors available.

Castle Daycare and Preschool aim to achieve this by:

In the event that the detector shows Carbon Monoxide to be present staff should:

  1. Turn off appliances or other sources of combustion at once.
  2. Immediately get fresh air into the premises by opening doors and windows.
  3. Call the gas emergency services

The number is: 0800 111 999,

A member of staff will

  • Alert all staff and children by sounding the alarm.
  • Evacuate the building with the children in their care in accordance with the local setting evacuation procedure.
  • Take out any registers for which they are responsible.

The Manager (where the Manager is not present the most senior member of staff present) will:

  • Check toilets, utility room and kitchen.
  • Ensure that registers of children are complete.
  • Ensure every child, member of staff and others are fully accounted for through taking registers and enquiry of staff.
  • Contact the fire service and other emergency services if required.
  • Act as the main point of contact for the Gas service and other appropriate services.
  • Take responsibility for contacting parents/guardians/ carers.
Do not reenter the premises until told to do so by an approved Gas Safe Engineer.
The evacuation of the nursery is a significant event and therefore Ofsted must be informed within 14 days of the evacuation

Forest School this week
We were all very excited to get on our way for our first forest school session after the Easter holidays. We started by looking for animal footprints in the mud, Lee mixed up some magic potion (plaster of Paris) and poured it into the footprint. We left the mixture to get hard and came back to it on our way back. We then went to have a play, we played chase and looked at some flowers. After a play we stopped to have some snack. We then carried a ladder that Lee had made over to a tree, we took turns climbing the tree and jumping down while holding Lee's hands we all had lots of fun we were so brave! We then headed back to find our foot prints, they had dried so we dug them up to take back to nursery!

In the event of staff shortages, parents with current DBS forms may be asked to support the nursery team in order to maintain smooth operations.

The manager or person in charge will inform the parents of the children attending that day of the change by telephoning them.

Answer phone messages will be updated and we will try and keep parents as informed and up to date as possible through emails, our blog and our website.
