Dear Parents

Apologises to parents whose children receive Early Years Funding. The first invoice you were sent for September was incorrect, due to a funding error. New invoices have been sent to you today. I apologise for the inconvenience.

Early Years Free Entitlement

As the start of term rolls closer, several parents have been asking about Early Years Free Entitlement and how this works.

The Early Years Free Entitlement is a Government scheme where any parent can access funding. The nursery can claim on behalf of the parents for up to 15 hours per week.

The Free Entitlement is available for children the term after their third birthday.

Parents are able to access 15 hours of Early Years free entitlement per week during school term times. This means during school holidays the regular fees will apply. The chart below shows the school holidays for 2014/2015 school year:

There will be no Early Years Free Entitlement on:

Term starts 2nd September 2014

W/C: 27th October 2014

W/C: 22nd December 2014

W/C: 29th December 2014

W/C: 16th February 2015

W/C: 30th March 2015

W/C: 6th April 2015

4th  May 2015

W/C: 25th May 2015

Term ends on 21st July 2015

The way we offer funding is, you can claim up to three hours of funding in one session (morning or afternoon.) If your child does a full day (8-6) they can claim up to six hours per day with four hours being charged.

You can split your funding with us and another setting as long as you do not claim more than fifteen hours per week between the two.

At the start of each term you will be asked to complete a form stating you are still happy for the nursery to claim on your behalf and to ensure you are still receiving your full entitlement.

If this is the first term your child has received funding please can you bring their passport to nursery so we can verify their eligible age.

Because of the way the funding is allocated your fees will now be different every month depending on how many funded hours your child has received that month.

When you receive your funded bills they will look a little different than what you are used too.

If the sessions have ** beside them they were eligible for funding and this has been claimed on your behalf. Sessions that were not eligible for funding as they fall in school holidays are not marked.

The invoice will state how many funded hours your child received that month and because these hours are free they are shown as:

27 hours of Free Entitlement                          £0.00

27-07-2012 15;34;46

Invoicing

If you would like to receive your invoices via email or set up a direct debit please let me know.

The direct debit can be used alongside vouchers. If you have any questions or would like a form, just ask!

Blood Borne Viruses infection control policy

Blood Borne Viruses infection control policy

Aim of policy

To provide a safe physical and emotional environment for all staff/ children and families involved with Castle Daycare & Preschool. Castle Daycare & Preschool recognises that blood borne viruses are a part of the community. This policy aims to minimise the risk of transmission to all associated with Castle Daycare & Preschool.

Points to consider

1. In dealing with an injury, all people should be treated as if they have a blood borne virus. This practice is commonly described as ‘universal precautions’. You will not always know whether a person who is bleeding is infectious; therefore it is important that anyone who treats a person follows established safety procedures when dealing with an injury. All blood should be treated as if it is infectious.

2. Children, staff and families have a right to privacy. Castle Daycare & Preschool would like to give families and staff the opportunity to give any information regarding any blood borne viruses that they or their children may have, with the knowledge that the information will go only so far as it is authorised and will only be used for the purpose for which it was gathered.

3. A child’s health status should not affect their right to an education. Children/ staff/ families should be able to participate in all activities in early childhood settings to the extent that their health permits.

4. Castle Daycare & Preschool encourages staff and families to let the Nursery Manager know if they are infected with any blood borne viruses. This information will be treated as confidential.

All personnel should know how to carry out the Nursery’s first aid and safety procedures.

First aid kits should be strategically sited around the nursery, particularly in areas when an injury is more likely to be sustained. These kits should contain all necessary equipment and materials for dealing with blood.

First aid kits are located: at the office, outdoor classroom and hallway
Guidelines for universal precautions on handling blood in children’s nurseries.

1. Before treating someone who is bleeding, staff will ensure they have covered any of their own cuts or abrasions with a water-proof dressing.

2. Wear gloves for all procedures.

3. Don't delay treatment of a child who is bleeding, under any circumstances because gloves are not immediately available. Use an absorbent barrier such as a towel, paper towel, handkerchief etc. for an actively bleeding child.

4. Dispose of used gloves, soiled dressings, sanitary towels, tissues, etc, in a place where they will not be handled, e.g. in bags which are burnt or buried.

5. Wipe clean and then sterilise all surfaces and instruments contaminated with blood. Make sure you use an effective disinfectant.

6. Where safety permits soak surfaces for 20 minutes and then wipe dry.

7. Wash hands thoroughly when you have finished. Hand washing is usually adequate for non-blood secretions, but the above precautions (i.e. gloves, etc) can also be used.

8. Make sure that first-aid kits include disposable gloves, disposable wipes or towels, plastic bags for contaminated waste.

Further useful information:

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) this is a virus which attacks the immune system. It is both immune suppressing and opportunistic, not only depleting the immune system but replicating within the body as the immune system becomes more damaged. People with HIV become increasingly likely to develop certain infections, or some forms of cancer, which the body would normally be able to resist easily.

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) this is the most severe clinical expression of infection with HIV. AIDS is diagnosed according to clinical criteria established by the regions or countries nominated health body. These criteria include the diagnoses of one of several opportunistic infections, including Kaposi's sarcoma, lymphoma, and a rare form of pneumonia.

Hepatitis B this is a vaccine preventable viral infection of the liver that causes nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting and jaundice (yellow skin).

Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease that affects the liver and can cause serious long-term liver problems.

How these viruses are transmitted:

HIV can only be transmitted through sexual intercourse/activity involving the exchange of body fluids (semen & vaginal fluids); the exchange of blood by sharing needles and syringes, by injecting drug users. It can also be transmitted from mother to baby during pregnancy, delivery and breastfeeding.

HIV positive children represent a minimal risk to others. It has not been conclusively demonstrated that HIV (and hepatitis B) infected children who bite others transmit the virus. Any child who is bleeding from an injury should be removed for the protection and safety of all other participants in whatever sport they are playing. The injury should be treated following the safety procedures set out in the above guidelines.

HIV is not transmitted by casual contact, such as sneezing, handshaking, and the sharing of eating and toilet facilities.

Hepatitis B is transmitted through close contact with blood or other body fluids of an infected person. This can happen in a number of ways: by close physical contact; by sexual intercourse; from mother to baby when the baby is born; by injecting drug users sharing non-sterilised needles; and by tattooists using non-sterilised needles.

Hepatitis C is transmitted through contact with infected blood. It occurs through sharing contaminated injecting equipment and contaminated skin piercing such as tattooing and body piercing.

Dear Parents

New flooring

Next week the new flooring will be laid in the Sunflowers room. This will mean all the rooms will have had the new floors fitted!

We will start moving the furniture out of the Sunflowers from Monday. From Wednesday the Sunflowers and Bluebell children will join up in Bluebell room. We will be back in Sunflowers on Monday.

We are also getting new furniture in Sunflowers in September.

For those parents who missed last week’s email:

Nursery News

From August/September some of the teams are having a change around:

The Sunflowers team will become Jess, Becci and Sophie. Jess’s day off will become a Friday and Sophie will stay as a Monday. Becci will be in all week.

The Bluebells Team will be Donna, Leanne, Rose and Chloe. Donna will keep her Fridays off, Leanne will be off on Wednesday, Chloe will be off Thursday and Rose is in all week

The Buttercup team will remain as Charlotte, Julia, Nilem and Magda. Their days off will be Charlotte on Monday, Julia on Thursday, Magda on Tuesday and Nilem on Friday.

Megan will remain as our floating staff member and Alison will also be covering in different rooms until she starts Forest School in November.

If there is any change to your child’s key person due to the staff moves you will be informed by your room in the next few days.

Learning Journey update

The Interactive Learning Diaries will be started from August/September time. You will receive your passwords to log on later in the term so the staff have time to get everything up and running. For those of you who missed the newsletter previously explaining what the Interactive Learning Diaries are, here is some more information and you can always ask your key person!

From September it will be easier to see what your child has been learning at Nursery and how this links to the Early Years Foundation stage.

Using a secure online program called the Interactive Learning Diary, ILD, we will be able to record observations, add photos and videos (videos!!!) and link them all to the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Each parent will then be given a password enabling them to see their child (and only their child’s) learning journey.

Parents will be able to add their own observations, photos and videos so that we will be able to create a picture of each child’s development at both nursery and home.

This system will enable the staff to link to the Early Years Foundation Stage much quicker, to do more frequent observations that are less time consuming and spend more time with the children and less time on paperwork.

The system is very secure, with the same level of security as internet banking. You can see them in action at  http://www.interactivelearningdiary.co.uk/

Forest School

After the October half term we are going to start running Forest School sessions for the Sunflowers.  Lee, who already runs the Forest School at our Markenfield  Road Nursery will be leading the sessions with Alison.

The children will take part in the Forest School sessions in groups of six, on a 1:3 ratio. They will be accompanied by a qualified member of the Forest School team, Lee and Alison.

Your child's forest school sessions will run once per week for six weeks, during term times only. The duration of these sessions will be 1 ¾ hours per week.

At Castle Nursery we pride ourselves in giving all of the children within the setting the opportunity to explore the outside world. The Forest School has been set up in order to enhance that experience.

Forest School is not just about taking the indoor classroom outside, but letting the children explore a new and exciting environment, whilst learning new skills that they may not have access to during their everyday lives. Forest school is based on the actual process of learning rather than the content of the lesson plans. This means that genuine Forest School practice is allowing the children' sessions to be unplanned, unexpected and ultimately unlimited. The children are given every encouragement to direct their own learning. As good practitioners we are able to do this by stimulating outdoor play through 'scaffolding' a child's learning, this is achieved through simply observing how a child behaves in the outdoor environment.

A woodland environment is central in supporting this dynamic approach to learning ,the dynamic nature of an outdoor environment - an infinite source of smells, textures, sounds and tastes; a range of visual stimuli from near to far, high to low, very big to very small.

Later in the term we will be giving out more information and permission letters to the Sunflower Parents. To start with, the sessions will run on a Wednesday morning but as we get up and running we are hoping to add in more sessions on other days. Forest School is optional but I hope you will be able to see how beneficial it will be for the children’s learning. Parents with CRB checks (we can help you get these) will be able to join in the sessions as well.

To give you the best idea about Forest school we are running a parent session on Sunday 12th October from 10-12. More information about this session will follow!

Breakfast club

One of the points raised on our annual survey was about extended opening hours.

So from September we will be offering breakfast club, giving you the chance to drop off from 7.45 am.

There will be a charge of £2.50 per session and sessions will need to be booked 24 hours in advance so we can organise staffing.

Menus

There are no planned changes to this week’s menu.
